Bees, Humans and the 4 Minute Mile

According to the laws of aerodynamics, a bee, a honey bee is not supposed to fly. But a bee does not know that it just flies. Experts, coaches and medical professionals who majored in the muscles and the fibres. All said it was impossible for the human body to run a mile under four minutes. Roger Bannister, an American did not know that and did not care and he ran a mile under four minutes. Once he did that, a whole bunch of human beings did.

We have our own Roger Bannisters and bee in the Indian startup world. For long, almost everyone has said that it was hard to build big businesses and companies out of India serving the Indian consumer. The Indian market was too complex or the Indian consumer was not a spendthrift and the number of Indian consumers was low.

Our Roger Bannisters and bees did not care or know. They went on to build and scale big. These companies have made India amongst the most vibrant economies in the world. However, in spite of all this, we have no frameworks, stories or framework to either understand the Indian consumer or scale a startup big in India. A lot of us have heard of Flipkart, Zomato, PayTm, Ola, Swiggy, BigBasket but there are many more. They all have stories and insights that unravel secrets about the Indian consumer, the Indian market and about scaling it big in India. We call these founders, the Maharajas and Maharanis of scale.

Maharajas of scale is podcast hosted by me, Krishna Jonakadala, a serial entrepreneur who built startups such as Mango Mobile Tv and FLIT – The Fashion Locator in Town. The show is produced by Nida Sahar, Ex CTO of Piggy Bank, Ted ex organiser, a geek and a poet. On this show, I go behind the scenes and as I talk to these Maharajas and Maharanis about their journey. I dig deep to demystify a complex beast called the Indian Consumer. Our goal is simple, other budding entrepreneurs take the ideas, hacks, a newfound understanding of the Indian consumer and most importantly, the mindset embodied by the Maharajas and Maharanis to make the next Trillion Dollars in wealth hazing India’s ascendency into the developed world.
